Small Animal Services

Desexing

Desexing, the surgical procedure to make an animal incapable of breeding, is the most common surgery performed at our veterinary hospital. This is the best way to reduce the numbers of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens. We recommend desexing for all pets where owners are not wanting to breed.  This eliminates unwanted offspring but also makes life easier to manage in the urban environment.

Desexing  is a day surgery procedure – pets are ready to go home a few hours after their surgery with detailed advice on how to properly care for your pet at home in the days following surgery.  We highly recommend preanaesthetic blood testing, intravenous fluids and additional pain relief for the safest surgical process and recovery.

All animals are treated with kindness and compassion, waking up with heat pads and warm blankets.

Dentistry

We offer free dental checks in August for Dental Month!

Dental hygiene plays in integral part in overall health in our pets. An annual scale and clean is an easy process to great dental hygiene. Please ring us on (02) 6361 8388 to book an appointment

Dental health is very important in your pet. You can examine your dog’s teeth at home and care for them using some simple steps.

Dermatology

Skin and ear problems are one of the most common reasons for dogs and cats to visit a vet. We know how frustrating coping with an itchy pet can be. There are many options to treat and manage these distressing conditions

Microchipping

Microchipping is the best way of ensuring a lost pet finds it way home safely. Microchipping is a simple procedure often done at the time of first vaccinations or desexing. It is very important to update any change of owner details – an incorrect contact phone number makes the chip useless. We love being able to reunite lost pets and their owners quickly – microchips make this simple.

Vaccinations
Vaccinating your pet strengthens immunity against disease and is one of the best insurances for the good health of your puppy, kitten or adult pet. Puppies & kittens need a course of vaccinations from 6 weeks of age and then annually during their life. Vaccination protocols will vary between practices based on the brands used, their research and experience. Our vaccination protocols are developed in line with international and Australian Veterinary Association guidelines.
Pathology
We have a modern, well equipped in-house pathology laboratory enabling us to offer prompt results for a wide range of testing from faecal egg counts to complete body function. Our in-house pathology is supported by fast external laboratory services.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a painless, non- invasive way to assist diagnosis of many conditions. It is most useful for looking at soft internal organs such as the liver, kidney, bladder and heart. We use ultrasound to diagnose pregnancy in companion animals such as dogs and cats and production animals such as horses and cows.
Chemotherapy
Like humans our pets can get different types of cancers. At OVH we work with oncologists to work out the best treatment plan for your pet. Some treatments need to be administered in hospital while others can be administered at home. We make sure your pets are well cared for and monitored closely during these treatments
Artificial Insemination
We can assist with issues that can arise during breeding, pregnancy and delivery. We perform artificial insemination with fresh semen in dogs. We now offer in house progesterone testing delivering prompt results for optimal mating success.
Surgery

Orange Veterinary Hospital provides a large range of routine and emergency surgery services from desexing, orthopaedics, caesarians, laparatomies, soft tissue injury repair through to foal periostal strips

Radiography

We are fully equipped to take radiographs (x-rays) of your pet for diagnostic purposes. We also offer mobile radiography for on farm situations. Radiographs are a very important tool to help us diagnose disease in animals, particularly for conditions involving bones, the chest or abdomen.

Puppy School

The first 16 weeks of a puppy’s life are critical in terms of teaching good behaviours and socialisation with humans and other dogs.

The aim of our puppy classes is to start every puppy and their families off on the right paw and set them up for success in their new homes to prevent unwanted behaviours before they even occur.

These classes are popular, and spots fill up quickly, so we recommend enquiring about these classes BEFORE your new addition arrives.

AQIS – Export compliance for companion animals.

Pets travelling overseas with their owners or being exported must adhere to strict vaccination and health quarantine guidelines which may differ from country to country. Our Vets are experienced in preparing animals for overseas travel and during a consultation can advise you on your needs depending on the country your pet is travelling to.

Specialist Referrals

We refer patients with complex conditions that cannot be treated by us to vets who are specialists in their fields.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can assist the body to heal itself by affecting certain physiological changes. Acupuncture can stimulate nerves, increase blood circulation, relieve muscle spasm and cause the release of hormones, such as endorphins (one of the body’s pain control chemicals) and cortisol (a natural steroid). OVH vet John Mason has received further training in this form of traditional medicine.

Rehabilitation

The benefits of physio and rehabilitation work together pre and post operatively. Goals include reducing pain; promoting healing; maintaining muscle mass & promoting muscle development; maintaining & improving joint stability & range of motion; reducing progression of degenerative joint disease and preventing re-injury.

Veterinarian Genevieve Liebich is the only certified canine rehabilitation therapist in the Central West. She works in conjunction with the patient’s veterinarian to achieve the desired outcomes.

Tick Prevention and Treatment

Orange Vet Hospital’s Andrew Denman explains how to prevent ticks, where to find them on your dog and what to do if you find a tick on your dog.

Like humans our pets can get different types of cancers. At OVH we work with oncologists to work out the best treatment plan for your pet. Some treatments need to be administered in hospital while others can be administered at home. We make sure your pets are well cared for and monitored closely during these treatments
